On June 28, 2023 around 6:20 a.m., the area of South Gaskin Avenue and Pinecrest Drive erupted in gunfire, according to a press release from the Douglas Police Department The release states that officers were dispatched to the area of South Gaskin Avenue and Pinecrest Drive in reference to shots being fired. Upon the arrival, officers determined that a residence and a vehicle had been shot multiple times. On the morning of Thursday, June 22, 2023, a deputy responded to a local cargo plant where a Fitzgerald man allegedly took his eight-month-old son from the boy’s mother and her boyfriend at gunpoint. A sheriff’s office report says that the officer responded to a kidnapping and aggravated assault call at Titanium Cargo shortly after 10 a.m. on June 22. When he arrived, he spoke with the baby’s mother and her boyfriend. The mother stated that her son’s father, Ezekiel Slacks of Fitzgerald, came to her workplace and met her outside. Over the last few weeks, local law enforcement officers have been involved in several chases, some reaching dangerous speeds. On June 25, officers from the Douglas Police Department found themselves in another chase, although this one was at much more manageable speeds. The incident report states that shortly before 5 p.m. on June 25, an officer observed a gold 2002 Cadillac Deville traveling north on South Madison Avenue with faulty equipment.
