The Coffee Trojans’ ninth grade team dropped a tough one to the Lowndes High Vikings 21-18 last week. Coffee struck first when running back KJ DeBruce broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run. A missed point-after gave Coffee a 6-0 lead. Lowndes answered promptly and scored on a touchdown pass to the back of the end zone. One person lost their life Tuesday morning following a wreck that occurred around 10:00 a.m. on GA Highway 32 West. Sources told DouglasNow that a Mercury Mountaineer is said to have entered into the opposing lane in the path of a truck hauling ice. The Mountaineer then struck the truck, causing it to turn over. When the ice truck flipped it caught fire, with the driver knocking out a broken window and escaping just before the vehicle became engulfed with flames. Coffee knocked off Jenkins 15-0 in 3 innings and Robinson struck out all 9 she faced without allowing a baserunner. The Coffee County chapter of the NAACP has issued a statement declaring a state of emergency in Coffee County following the death of Pernell Harris on August 23, 2022. Harris went into distress after getting into an altercation with law enforcement officers on August 25, 2021. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has investigated the incident but has not released its findings. A Douglas native has been found deceased in a marsh near Charleston, South Carolina, after being missing since August 12, 2022. Megan Daniel Rich, 41, of Summerville, South Carolina, was last seen on August 12 and reported missing on August 16, according to multiple reports. Rich’s body was found Friday, August 19, and positively identified on Saturday, August 20. During the investigation into Rich’s disappearance, investigators had questioned Brian Baker, 59, the father of Rich’s four-month-old child. A juvenile has been implicated in the death of Loyce Tucker, 17, of Douglas, who was a resident at the Waycross Regional Youth Detention Center in Waycross. Tucker was reported unresponsive on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. Two days later, on Thursday, August 11, 2022, Tucker passed away from injuries sustained at the RYDC. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating Tucker’s death. The GBI has arrested Thomas Lee Hicks, age 30, of Waycross, GA and charged him with one count of murder in the 2nd degree, two counts of cruelty to children in the 2nd degree, and one count of violation of oath of office in connection to the death of a juvenile at the Waycross Regional Youth Detention Center, where Hicks was a juvenile correctional officer. Rodarious “Rod” Swanson, 24, was arrested in Lowndes County on August 15, 2022 and charged with Felony Murder and Aggravated Assault in connection with the June 18 shooting death of Savion McRae, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Swanson is the third individual arrested and charged with murder in McRae’s death. Travion Snell, 22, and Shamond Campbell, 18, both of Douglas, have also been arrested on murder charges and remain in jail.
