South Georgia State College (SGSC) and the Satilla Riverkeeper (SRK) are the newest educational partners in South Georgia. The two organizations established the Satilla Riverkeeper and South Georgia State College Education and Training Alliance during a recent signing ceremony on SGSC’s Waycross Campus. “An important part of our mission as a college is to provide our students with access to ecological sites in this part of the state,” said SGSC President Dr. Virginia Carson. “The Satilla River is a feather in this region’s cap, and I am proud of the fact that this partnership will be a vital educational resource…
The Douglas Fire Department recently visited Indian Creek Pre-K. Mrs. Milhollin’s Pre-K class really enjoyed the fire department’s visit. Thank you, Douglas Fire Department!
Thursday, Oct. 9 was a busy day at Eastside Elementary. The first Parent/Teacher Conference marked the end of the first nine weeks of school. Parents were able to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress and were given helpful study tips. Parents were also encouraged to participate in a survey, which helps to bring in extra funding for our schools and to donate blood to Oneblood. As well, the fall book fair was in full swing to earn needed money for the school. Faculty, staff, and students also want to say a big thank you to Eastside’s PTO, which…
During the week of Fire Safety in Georgia, October 6-10, the Pre-K students at Eastside Elementary participated in many fire safety activities in order to become fire wise. The children learned the importance of having a family fire drill and establishing a safe meeting place near their home. The young Pre-K students even had homework to see if they had a working smoke alarm in their home and if so to find out where it is located. The students participated in role play activities by practicing what to do incase their clothing or body ever caught fire — stop, drop,…

Mrs. Benton and Mrs. Woodard’s third graders at Westside Elementary are having a blast kicking off their multiplication math unit. Students read the book One Hundred Hungry Ants written by Elinor J. Pinczes out loud for the first read. During the second read aloud, students worked in small groups in various locations of the room creating the story using manipulatives. The story is about 100 hungry ants that are marching toward a picnic. The littlest ant does not think they are going fast enough so he continues making them get into new groups. The ants started out in one line…
Maria Williams of Fitzgerald is the first recipient of the “Charles Eames Travel Fund.” Williams is a student on the Coffee campus. The winner for September is Brittany Harrell, who is also from the Coffee campus of Wiregrass. Charles Eames, a retired librarian from Waycros, has found a unique way to help college students at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College at the Ben Hill-Irwin and Coffee campuses, as well as from other areas all across South Georgia. He made a donation to the Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation North recently to provide gasoline scholarships each month to help students with transportation…
It’s almost 3 a.m., and I can’t sleep…again. One of the side-effects of PTSD, I’m sure. I never really ever thought that I’d experience that. I mean, isn’t post traumatic stress disorder reserved for war vets and violent crime victims? Apparently not. For some reason, He speaks to me a lot at night. Maybe it’s because that’s when I’m most still. Most silent. Most receptive to hear Him. Or maybe it’s because He realizes that’s when I need Him most. The nights are still so very hard. As I sit typing these words, I’m listening to “How He Loves” as…
Dear Editor: After having never written a letter to the editor in all the time I have resided in Coffee County, I now find myself writing another in a span of a few weeks. The issues are important and additional facts have come to light that the public should be aware of. In my first letter, I addressed the falsity of certain campaign “terrorists” ads run by U.S. Senate candidate David Perdue. I also expressed concern about Mr. David Perdue’s connections to former Governor Sonny Perdue, as well as representations by David Perdue in his ads in which he claims…
