The City of Douglas Public Information Department and Coffee County Historical Society held a drawing on Friday, Dec. 12, for a gift basket in recognition of a week-long celebration for the Ashley Slater House Centennial. Citizens were encouraged to drop by the Douglas Visitor Information Center to answer daily trivia questions to receive a commemorative ornament and to register for the gift basket drawing that was held on Friday. Guests who attended the ribbon cutting of the Visitor Information Center and who attended the Night of Living History were also encouraged to register. Kayla Smith of Coffee County is among four sem-finalists chosen for Wiregrass College’s Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL), according to Lydia Hubert, coordinator for the Wiregrass GOAL program. GOAL, a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia, honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state’s technical college students. GOAL winners are selected at each of the state’s 24 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regent college with a technical education division. Westside Elementary School hosted Family Math Night: Countdown to Christmas on December 11. Academic Coach Kim Caves started off the night’s activities by sharing information with parents about the upcoming Georgia Milestones Assessment that will be replacing the CRCT. To give parents a taste of current math standards, Ms. Caves challenged parents to compete against students in solving constructed-response math problems. As the temperature outside drops, Douglas families take to the indoors to keep safe and warm. What they may not realize is that turning up the heat can increase the risk of home heating fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), half of all home heating fires occur during the winter months.
