City Commissioner (Ward 2) Kentaiwon Carter-Durham was awarded the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute’s Certificate of Distinction during the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Annual Convention on June 26, 2023. The annual GMA Convention provides city officials with an opportunity to learn more about legislation under consideration, attend training sessions, and hear from state leaders. To receive a Certificate of Distinction, a city official must complete a minimum of 204 hours of training, including at least 72 hours from a list of required courses from the Newly Elected Officials Institute and the Robert E. Two shootings took place in Douglas on Wednesday, June 28. The first one happened just after 6 a.m. on South Gaskin Avenue and Pinecrest Drive, and resulted in the arrests of Jaquiez Young and Isaiah Wright. The second incident happened on North June Avenue around 11:30 p.m. and thus far has not yielded any arrests although police officers are looking for multiple suspects. The City of Douglas would like to encourage citizens to practice safety with fireworks and would like to make the public aware of the city ordinance regarding fireworks. Fireworks can be used during the hours of 10 am and 9:00 pm. On July 3 and 4, fireworks can be used for an extended time from 9:00 p.m.-11:59 p.m. It is illegal to use any fireworks indoors. It is unlawful to ignite fireworks within or on a roadway, city/county property, or within 100 yards of a hospital or nursing home. Persons must be at least 18 years of age to purchase,…
