Sharon Parker Vickers, age 84, of Douglas, Georgia passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at her residence. Mrs. Vickers was born on November 18, 1938, in Douglas, GA, to the late Marion A. Parker and the late Cleo Davis Parker Bagent. A lifelong resident of Douglas, Mrs. Vickers was married to Micajah (“Amos”) Vickers for 65 years until his death in 2021. She was a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker before her retirement. Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that all Regional Commissions reported a rise in unemployment rates in May. “Despite an uptick in the unemployment rate, Georgia’s economy and job market remains red hot while the number of claims remains relatively low – especially compared to the national numbers,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “While one month does not signal a trend, my administration will continue to keep a close eye on the labor market to identify any new developments.” In May, the labor force rose in all Regional Commissions. Wiregrass Tech student Brandon Howell has completed the requirement for his national apprenticeship and was recognized recently by Ace Electric, Inc. of Valdosta and Wiregrass. Howell started as a registered apprentice with the US Department of Labor when he was a senior at Lowndes High School. While in high school, Howell was part of the first group of students hired by Ace Electric as part of their Amped program and was a dual enrollment student through Wiregrass in the Commercial Electrical Construction Program. Unity Park is getting a facelift. The City of Douglas has been awarded funding from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources through their Land and Water Conservation Fund. This funding is provided for the acquisition, development, and rehabilitation of outdoor recreation lands and facilities. The City of Douglas will receive $278,000.00 from this grant funding to use towards improvements for Unity Park. In addition to the grant award, the City of Douglas has committed to investing $293,000 in this project for a total estimated cost of completion of $571,000. Plans for the improvements to…
