Dr. Otis Rodney Vickers, age 74, of Douglas, Georgia passed away peacefully on Friday, May 7, 2021 at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Dr. Vickers was born on December 12, 1946 in Douglas, GA to the late Otis Vickers and Sybil May Vickers. Dr. Vickers was born and raised in Coffee County, where he lived most of his life, growing up in the Ambrose community and attending Coffee County public schools. He was an active member of the 4-H Club, ultimately serving as President of the State Club Council. Dr. Vickers attended Emory University and graduated in 1968 with a degree in chemistry. He was a…

The National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division I Men’s Basketball Committee has selected South Georgia State College’s Jalen King as a third team NJCAA All-American. King, a 6’5″ sophomore from Columbus, Ga., averaged 15 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game for the Hawks this past season. He finished in the top ten in the GCAA in field goal percentage (52.8 percent). The WWII Flight Training Air Base Preservation and Development Committee held an Arbor Day and Tree Dedication Ceremony on April 30, 2021 in honor of longtime committee member and retired city employee, Ken Hayes. Ken was instrumental in the development of the committee and played a major role with the WWII Air Base being place on the National Register of Historic Places. The Georgia 4-H State BB Match was scheduled to be held at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center near Eatonton, Georgia, on Saturday, April 24. Due to bad weather being predicted, the match was postponed until Sunday, April 25. In compliance with COVID-19 restrictions, BB teams were brought in at different times and each team shot all of their targets, took their exam, and then left Rock Eagle so the next teams could come in to shoot. Elton Anthony Reese was born July 15, 1939, to the late Lester Rease and Willie Mae Eady Rease in Coffee County, Georgia. He was the eldest of nine siblings. He received his early education at George Washington Carver High School in Douglas, GA graduating in 1958. In 1962 he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served in Germany.
