Infant Joseph Messiah Madison of Nicholls passed away April 9, 2020 in Irwin County Hospital. He was called for a different mission with his Heavenly Father before his birth. He was truly loved by many before anyone had ever meet him. Team F from Pierce County High School won the annual South Georgia State College High School Mathematics Tournament hosted earlier this spring by SGSC’s Waycross Campus. A total of 80 students from Brantley, Charlton, Pierce and Ware Counties participated in the competition. The first portion of the event featured a 75-minute, 40-question individual multiple choice exam that covered topics in the high school curriculum – algebra, trigonometry, geometry and calculus. Students William Hoover, Shawn Lucas, and Tyler Hall started the spring semester back in January at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, excited to be completing their last course before earning their associate’s degree. Enrolled in mechatronics and engineering, the three students started working on their capstone project, a semester-long, collaborative effort to design and manufacture a product using real world engineering practices and the same cutting-edge technologies found in local manufacturing facilities. As part of the Georgia HEART Hospital Program, Ameris Bank has donated $2,000,000 in financial support to 19 rural hospitals located throughout the bank’s footprint in Georgia. Ameris Bank has participated in the program since 2018, contributing over $4,000,000 to rural Georgia hospitals. The Georgia HEART Hospital Program partners with the Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit bill (State Bill 258) to increase funding to rural and critical access hospitals in the state of Georgia. Victor Michael Vickers, aged 59, of Douglas, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Vickers was born July 21, 1960, the son of Micajah J. (“Amos”) and Sharon Parker Vickers. Mr. Vickers was of the Baptist faith. He was a broadcast engineer by profession and had a remarkable gift for all things related to electronics and mechanics. Peggy Dukes Guthrie, age 89, of Douglas, GA, passed away on April 5, 2020 at The Landings of Douglas following an extended illness. Mrs. Guthrie was born September 8, 1930 in Waycross, GA, the daughter of the late David Clinton Dukes and Lovie Ernestine Harris Dukes Baker. Mrs. Guthrie was a member of the Douglas First United Methodist Church and the Shell Vickers Sunday School class. South Georgia State College recently hosted a resource day for the migrant community on its campus in Douglas, Georgia. The event was held on the Douglas Campus in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Education, Migrant Division and other community and state partners. SGSC hosted over 200 visitors that attended informative sessions preceded by a greeting from SGSC President Ingrid Thompson-Sellers. Hilaria Taft, an SGSC alumna, served as the keynote speaker.
