Simmons named to CCG Dean’s List The College of Coastal Georgia’s Office of the President has announced the students who have earned their place on the Dean’s List by their high academic performance during the Spring 2019 semester. Dr. G. Wayne Clough was named Conservationist of the Year at the Satilla Riverkeeper’s 15th Annual Gala on August 17 at Dr. Wade and Rosemary Strickland’s Lodge in Brantley County. Dr. Clough grew up in Douglas as a member of a family who settled in South Georgia generations ago. A civil engineer, he served with distinction on the faculties of Duke University, Stanford University, Virginia Tech, and the University of Washington before returning to his alma mater to complete an extremely successful tenure as president of Georgia Tech from 1994 – 2008. Freddie Lampkin, Jr. was found guilty on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2019, by a Coffee County jury for the murder of Chris Tyson that occurred on May 7, 2018. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Ian Sansot and Judge Andy Spivey presided over the proceedings. The evidence showed that Chris Tyson (who had just completed his training to become a Georgia state trooper) was at the home of Margie Carson, his wife’s aunt, to repair her dryer. Mrs. Mary Helen Wright Tanner, 84, of Douglas passed away at Coffee Regional Medical Center on Friday August 16, 2019. She was born on Tuesday, May 28, 1935 in Coffee County to the Late Arlie James Wright and Pearl P. Wright Mancil. She was a homemaker and a member of Saving Grace Ministries. Mrs. Tanner is survived by daughters; Brenda Sue Merritt of Douglas, Judith Ann Payton (Alvin) of Douglas, and Lynn Michele Smith (Scotty) of Douglas; sister Olis Cryder; grandchildren that she raised, Candace Parkerson and Chris Johnson; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
