Douglas First Methodist Church is hosting GriefShare, a 13-week support group to navigate through the process of losing a family member or friend. The video-supported groups facilitated by spouses Denise and Mark Miller help participants understand the difficult emotions of grief. The City of Douglas and GFL Environmental will continue to offer free residential Junk Drop-Off Days to help citizens rid properties of excess trash and large items. Normally, the dates are on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays (excluding holiday weekends) each month at Shirley Avenue (corner of Shirley Ave. and College Park Dr.) from 8:30am-11:45am. Hurricane Helene caused significant destruction in Douglas and Coffee County, damaging over 60 years’ worth of trees and vegetation and producing thousands of tons of debris. Coffee County has contracted independent companies to assist with the cleanup of debris from homes and yards. It is estimated that there are about 3 million cubic yards of debris to pick up, and as of December 16, 2024, only 1.7 million cubic yards had been collected. “The debris cleanup from Helene is a massive undertaking. South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team has finished the first two months of the regular season 11-2 with the start of the conference schedule just around the corner. The Hawks won their first seven games before falling to Chipola College (73-58) on the road Dec. 3. The next three games included wins over Eastern Florida State (69-65), Brunswick Community College (87-53), and Indian River State (86-74).
