Mrs. Annie Lou Bryant Roberts, age 70 of Douglas, passed away Saturday morning, April 7, 2018 at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Roberts was born April 1, 1948 in Lumber City, Telfair County, GA to the late Luther Bryant and the late Minnie Pilgrim Bryant. Survivors include: children: David Lee Bryan – Ocilla, GA, Terry Bryan and Dennis Roberts, both of Wray, GA., Richard Roberts and his wife Dana of Willacoochee, GA.; brother, Dean Bryant of Orlando, FL.; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. On Saturday, March 24, these 4th and 5th grade students traveled to the Regional MathFest Competition in Atlanta, GA. There they competed alongside 4,200 other participants from across the southeast region. The Indian Creek team qualified for the National MathFest Competition in Birmingham, AL. While honing their math skills with Math Team Coach, Mrs. Shae Hare, students have also demonstrated the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and problem solving! On Monday, April 9, 2018, the City of Douglas Mayor and Board of Commission swore in the members of the inaugural Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council. The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council will serve as an advisory council to the Mayor and Commission. Members of the council will have several sessions which will include: orientation, discussion of city issues and brainstorming for new ideas for the Mayor and government leaders; collection of input through outreach, surveys, and community meetings; production of a city-wide youth town hall and television show; and participation in retreats, training, and travel experiences by building leadership skills.
High School students may enroll for Dual Enrollment classes during Wiregrass Georgia Technical College’s Summer Express Semester. High School students can start classes beginning May 29 through July 24. Classes will not meet during the week of July 2 – 6 and there are no classes on Fridays during the summer. The Summer Express allows students to get ahead and take core classes in a shortened semester during their summer break. All tuition, fees and books are at no cost to the students. Members of Team B from Lowndes High School captured first place in the annual Mathematics Tournament held recently on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus. A total of 105 students from eight high schools – Brantley, Charlton, Cook, Georgia Christian, Lowndes, Pierce, Valdosta, and Ware – competed in the event. Students participated in individual and team competitions. The individual competition featured a 75-minute, 40-question multiple choice exam that covered topics in the high school curriculum – algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus. Satilla Riverkeeper will hold a river cleanup from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14. This cleanup is part of a larger, coordinated cleanup week and trash awareness campaign that Waterkeeper Organizations and Affiliates of the Gulf and South Atlantic states are taking part in for Earth Week. Satilla Riverkeeper and volunteers will focus efforts on Ava Lightsey Landing at Highway 82 in Atkinson (Brantley County), removing single-use plastics, cigarette butts, tires, electronics, recyclables and more. The City of Douglas will host the Georgia Municipal Cemetery Association’s (GMCA) workshop, “S.O.P. of Grave Digging and Cemetery Etiquette,” on Thursday, April 12, 2018, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Central Square Complex – Youth Center. Several experts from cemeteries around the state will be presenting information to funeral directors and grave diggers. “It is important that we have this workshop to prevent improper techniques of grave digging from occurring at our cemetery as well as other cemeteries across the community,” says Henry Milhollin, Douglas Cemetery Attendant and GMCA District 8 Manager. The South Georgia State College Hawks earned four wins over Georgia Highlands in a week of baseball action to bring their overall record to 27-14 with a conference record of 13-6. This four-game winning streak has moved the Hawks into second place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) ranking. Beverly Johns recently attended the Council of Probate Court Judges Spring Conference. This conference is sponsored by the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education and was held at the King and Prince Resort for Continuing Education in St. Simons Island, Ga., March 19-22. The Judges attended judicial training courses. Course topics this year included: Self-Representing Litigants, Licenses, Wills & Estates, Unclaimed Funds, Missing Heirs, Interpreters and Mock Trial Scenarios. Probate Judges are now required to become certified. This certification requires Judges to complete required courses and test within a certain time frame.
