On Thursday March 22, 2018, our Coffee Middle School tennis team played their South Georgia Athletic Conference Tournament and emerged victorious. The girls lost in the second round with a hard fought battle against Hahira to take 4th place. The boys were the Conference Champions and this was the third year in a row that they have accomplished this incredible result. This means that those seven boys who are 8th graders have been on a championship team every year they have played with CMS. Congratulations to the entire CMS Tennis team for their hard work, drive, and dedication! Go Trojans!
The Douglas Kiwanis Club Strawberry Sale held on Saturday, March 24, 2018, was quite successful. The club wishes to thank everyone in the community that supported the sale. The proceeds from the sale will go to children’s programs in the community.
The Leadership Coffee Youth Academy in partnership with the Douglas/Coffee County Chamber of Commerce took a leadership trip to the Coffee County Courthouse. Judge Preston was very gracious and took time from his court schedule to welcome the 7th grade Leadership Coffee Youth Academy students to his courtroom and discussed the the different state and superior court systems in our area, as well as his duties and responsibilities as a state court judge. Monday, March 19, the Alma Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit stopped a vehicle on W. 12th St. for a windshield violation. The traffic stop led to the arrest of William Alfred Lee, 43 of Alma, for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of methamphetamine. Monday evening, March 19, APD’s Crime Suppression Unit arrested Blake Carlton Hardy, 25 of Waycross, and Sabrina Johnson, 37 of Alma, for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of methamphetamine. A convicted methamphetamine dealer is facing more prison time after Douglas-Coffee County drug agents discovered over 24 grams of meth during a search of his residence earlier this week. 50-year-old Kenneth Woodrow Mancil was convicted of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute in Coffee County Superior Court in November 2015 and was released from incarceration to serve the remainder of his sentence on parole in April 2017. On Thursday, March 1, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) Douglas Regional Office received a request by the Douglas Police Department to assist with a missing duty weapon investigation. On Wednesday, February 28, 2018, an officer with the Douglas Police Department reported that he had lost or misplaced his issued AR-15 rifle while on duty. The officer last reported being in possession of the weapon between the dates of February 26, 2018, and February 27, 2018.
