Mrs. Mary Frances Adams Wood, age 74 of Douglas, GA passed away late Sunday evening, February 25, 2018 at her residence following a short illness. Mrs. Wood was born October 23, 1943 to the late John Q. Adams and the late Virsie Cola Rowland Adams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her step-mother, Nell Ellis Adams; and siblings: Helen, Donald, Dorman, Rev. T. L., Thurston and Wanda. She was born November 4, 1920 to the late Milton Hicks LaGrone and the late Lula Naomi Wingate LaGrone. Coffee County investigators have arrested an absconded sex offender wanted for failing to comply with the requirements of his sex offender registration. 33-year-old Tyrone Lamar Alexander was apprehended by deputies Wednesday night, Feb. 28, after investigators learned he’d checked in to a local motel. Alexander was convicted of statutory rape in 2009 and had failed to keep sheriff’s authorities apprised of his residential address, as required by his sex offender status. Alexander faces one charge of failing to register his address and also has a pending warrant for violating the terms of his probation.
South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Cultural Exchange Club on both the Douglas and Waycross campuses came together to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which was Friday, Feb. 16, 2018. The group left the Douglas campus that morning with 11 students and faculty members headed for Atlanta. They enjoyed dinner that evening at Ponce City Market. There were varying restaurants to choose from and students were able to experience foods from different cultures. Jeremiah made 23 out of the 25 free throws to win the title. He will travel to Valdosta where he will be competing for the shot at Nationals in Chicago, IL. The 19th annual Coffee Regional Medical Center Heart 2 Heart 5K Run held Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, was a huge success with 177 participants. Runners and walkers lined up in the Medical Center parking lot to compete for trophies, raffle prizes and good health. The 5K (3.1 miles) race was part of the 2018 Georgia Grand Prix Series. In addition to the 5K event, we also had a 10K run, three-mile walk and a one mile Youth Fun Run. All 10K and One Milers crossing the finish line received a commemorative medal. South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) baseball team spent the weekend in Ocala, Florida, with games against the College of Central Florida (CF) Patriots and the Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) Buccaneers. On Friday, Feb. 23, the Hawks came away with a win by a score of 9–7. SGSC built a five-run lead in the fifth inning and then held off Central Florida’s charge in the remaining innings.
