Wednesday evening, Jan. 10, the Alma Police Department responded to a theft of motor vehicle call on E. 7th St. Thursday, Jan. 11, the Waycross Police Department recovered the vehicle in Waycross and apprehended the driver of the vehicle. APD has charged Johnny Antoan Batton, 20 of Alma, with theft by taking-motor vehicle. Batton is also facing charges in Waycross regarding this incident. Batton was previously out of jail on bond for the Sept. 1, 2016 theft of a motor vehicle which occurred on E. 12th St in Alma. Batton was apprehended by Waycross Police in that vehicle also.

Thursday evening, Jan. 11, the Alma Police Department and the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office arrested the last identified shooter in the Dec. 1, 2017 shooting which occurred on N. Baker St. Cornelius Lorenzo Perry, Jr, 20 of Alma, has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Thursday morning, Jan. 11, the Alma Police Department and the United States Marshals Service arrested Glenn Darius Smith, 24 of Alma, without incident at 607 Stewart Drive in Alma. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation had previously secured arrest warrants for Smith for aggravated assault stemming from the Dec. 1, 2017 shoot-out in Alma. Smith is also a person of interest in the earlier morning shooting on that same day.

The Magnolia Midlands Travel Association (MMTA) is requesting proposals for a tourism driven project entitled “Take Flight”. For this project, artists who live or attend college within the region, are being sought to produce artwork that will engage Georgiavisitors and tell the story of the region. The artist will be commissioned to install a set of Eagle wings on a main wall in the State Visitor Information Center in Sylvania, Georgia.
