The City of Douglas hosted its quarterly Hometown Connection meeting on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at Central Square Complex. They participated in many competitions, including Meats Evaluation. Competitors had to identify 25 cuts of meat, determine the primal, wholesale, retail name and determine the cookery method of each cut of meat. These students also had to place two classes of meat based on various criteria. The overall winner of this event was the team from George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC). Tuesday night, October 10, the Alma Police Department became involved in the pursuit of a man refusing to leave a home on Perkins St. During the chase, the man, identified as Glen Merrill, 52 of Alma, abandoned a backpack containing five bags of marijuana 3 ½ ounces and two packages of crystal methamphetamine. Merrill managed to evade officers. APD has secured arrest warrants for Merrill for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Three people are behind bars on methamphetamine and other drug charges following a traffic stop last week. On Oct. 3, 2017, deputies from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a stop on a vehicle on New Forest Hwy. in the area of the Oak Park community. The Coffee County K-9 Unit and detectives from the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit assisted the deputies with the traffic stop. While conducting the investigation, Ellis Minchey IV, a 26-year-old male from Douglas, Ga., was found to be in possession of methamphetamine (1gram) and possession of alprazolam (1 tablet), a Schedule IV Controlled Substance. The City of Douglas, 63rd Preservation Society, and Airbase Preservation Committee are proud to announce that the cadets from the 63rd Army-Air Force Flight Training Detachment will return to Douglas for their reunion, October 15–19, 2017. Plans are underway to create another memorable reunion for these cadets and their families. During World War II, the Raymond Richardson Aviation Company, established the 63rd Army Air Force Flight Training Pilot School which trained approximately 8,000 cadets on combative flight skills and experiences.
