At the regular City Commission meeting on Monday, October 9, 2017, Helping Hands Bikers (HHB) presented the Mary Hayes Center for Social Change and the Miracle Field Project with a donation of $428.00 each. The funds were raised from the 50/50 draw that was held during the South Georgia BBQ & Outdoor Festival. Helping Hands Bikers are a group of local motorcyclists, who were organized in 2017, to help with motorcycle events during the South Georgia BBQ & Outdoor Festival and are committed to giving back to the community. Wednesday afternoon, October 4, the Alma Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit was monitoring traffic in the school zone at the Bacon County Elementary School when an officer observed a BMW traveling almost twice the posted speed limit. The driver led officers on a brief vehicle pursuit before crossing GA HWY 32 (E. 16th St.) and driving the vehicle into the Spiritual Body Church located on E. 16th St. The driver actually jumped out of the vehicle while the vehicle was moving, causing the vehicle to strike the church; damage to Spiritual Body Church was minimal. The STEM Center on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus recently hosted its first “STEM Café” featuring a scientist and physicist from the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA). Dr. Weiping Yu’s presentation was entitled, “The STEM Education and Space Exploration” and included demonstrations of gravity’s effect on Earth and in the solar system. Fifty people attended the event, and Yu spent an extra hour after his presentation having conversations with interested students. SGSC’s STEM Coordinator Sarah E. The South Georgia State College (SGSC) School of Nursing is proud to announce that its most recent graduating class scored a 98 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-RN exam administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. This standardized exam is given to registered nurse graduates in order to determine whether or not they are qualified to practice entry-level nursing. Graduates are required to pass the exam before they are considered eligible for a nursing license.
