Ms. Melody Shawn Brown, age 48 of Nicholls, GA, passed away early Saturday morning October 21, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center Downtown, Jacksonville, FL following a short illness. Ms. Brown, a native of Ft. Dix, New Jersey, was born September 30, 1969 to the late Howard R. Gerson and the late Jacqueline K. Decker Gerson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Instructors at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College have nominated 23 of their students for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) competition, according to Lydia Hubert, coordinator for the college’s GOAL program. These nominations come from the college’s four campuses; Ben Hill-Irwin, Coffee, Cook, and Valdosta, and this year the nominees include two sets of siblings. The Pre-K students at Eastside Elementary recently enjoyed their first field trip of the year. The students loaded up a Coffee County School Bus driven by Mrs. Wanda Burkett and headed to Rutland’s Farm for a day of fun and exploration. The children arrived and went to the Petting Zoo to feed the various animals. Feeding goats, running with rabbits and watching a 700 pound hog eat bread and drink a soda was the first adventure of the day. The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks opened their home preseason schedule Monday night with an 86-77 win over the NAIA Middle Georgia State University (MGSU) Knights. The Hawks and Knights battled to a 30-30 tie at the end of the first half. The scoreboard was reset at halftime, and SGSC outscored MGSU 46-40 in the second half. Dye Foundation to support the faculty, staff and students on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus.
