Coffee County 4-H Poultry Judging team had the opportunity to advance to the state poultry judging contest on Friday, May 12th after placing second at the area contest in Tifton on May 1st. Team members included Kyya Johnson, T.K. McIver, Micheal Woods, and Evie Woodward. Registration for summer semester at South Georgia State College is currently underway. Students may register online or attend an onsite registration at the campus they plan to attend. Onsite registration will be held at the Douglas Campus and the Waycross Campus on June 1, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. The first day of class is Monday, June 5. Payment is due at the time registration occurs. A Coffee County man wanted for failing to appear in court on misdemeanor charges faces felony drug manufacturing charges after deputies discovered a small marijuana growing operation at his home. Coffee County deputies attempted to serve bench warrants on 30-year-old Charles Sears Roberts III shortly after midnight, May 18, at a residence on Jasmine Drive. Roberts had failed to appear in court earlier this year after being cited for a seatbelt violation and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Wednesday, University System of Georgia Chancellor Steve Wrigley announced that the Board of Regents has approved the permanent appointment of Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers as president of South Georgia State College (SGSC) in Douglas and Waycross. She has served as interim president since June 30, 2016. A fight that began over cigarettes led to the arrest of a Coffee County man on battery and child cruelty charges Tuesday afternoon. Coffee County deputies responded to a residence off Burl Mill Road around 1 p.m., May 16, in reference to a possible domestic dispute in progress. When officers arrived, the 36-year-old female victim stated her and her boyfriend had gotten into a verbal altercation over cigarettes, which led to the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Edward Scott Nelson, grabbing her at the top of the chest area and shoving her. Tuesday, May 16, the Alma Police Department’s Criminal Investigative Division arrested Lashirley White, 25 of Alma, for two counts of theft by taking. On April 28, 2017, and May 1, White, a contract worker for the Bacon County School System, allegedly entered a classroom and took $1,570, all of which were raised for extracurricular activities. To date, Alma police has recovered $537.42, $410 of which was discovered hidden in a trash receptacle in a girls’ restroom. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Trey Griffin of Poulan and Heather Hall of Waycross won the 40-mile bike race at the 13th Annual Big Heart Charity Bike Ride, held on May 13, 2017 at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Forty-five cyclists took part in the event between the race and the various non-competitive ride options. The cyclists participated in one of the traditional 20, 40, 60, or 100 mile rides or the newest addition, the 40-mile race.
