The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Foundation will host “An Evening of Opportunity” Gala on Tuesday, May 23. Proceeds from the event will provide need-based scholarships for students at SGSC. Silas Childers, Journalism Student at GWCFC George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) Journalism class recently went on a field trip where they visited South Georgia State College (SGSC). The students were driven there on a bus and then they walked back to their school, which was not hard considering the school is less than a mile away. Coffee County sheriff’s officials arrested an 18-year-old student Friday morning after it was discovered he’d posted a life-threatening comment towards a school faculty member on social media. Juan Solomon Brockington was taken into custody after referring to the faculty member in an expletive-filled post to the social media site “Snapchat,” stating “I will kill you.” Brockington admitted to making the threat and was subsequently transported to the Coffee County Jail. He faces one charge of terroristic threats via computer or computer network.

First Academy will be adding seventh grade for the 2017-18 school year. In addition, a half day Pre-K program to go along with its full day Pre-K program will be offered. Registration for the 2017-18 school year is ongoing at First Academy for preschool through middle school at the school’s new website, www.firstacademydouglas.org. A local convicted felon wanted for violating the conditions of his parole faces drug distribution charges following an incident Wednesday. State parole officers arrived at the residence of 26-year-old Rashaan Cortez Sims off U.S. Highway 441 South to execute an arrest warrant for a parole violation. Once taken into custody, Sims requested officers to retrieve his cell phone from inside the home. Once inside, officers spotted a clear plastic bag containing suspected marijuana on top of a dresser in the master bedroom.
