It’s the time of the year for scholarships and the Lions Club is the latest organization to announce its round of awards. Lions Club President Brian Norris (l) and Program Chairman Scott Smith (r) congratulate two scholarship award winners Tuesday. Allie Morgan (center, right,pictured with parents) received the Willie Pearl Davis Scholarship. D’Carius Clark (center left with parents) received the Buck Preston scholarship. Both scholarships recognize outstanding academic performance and leadership qualities.
Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is hosting a fun and educational camp this summer. The Coffee Campus will be hosting a Cosmo Camp for Kids, June 6 – 8. The Cosmetology Department is hosting the camp for students in grades second to eighth. Students will perform manicures, pedicures, and more. They will get to create nail art while learning proper sanitation measures. The camp will be held on the Coffee Campus from 8:00 a.m. until noon. There were several special recognitions at the Coffee County Board of Education’s April 27th School Board Meeting. Recognitions included Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year, CTAE National Winners, 2017 Young Authors System Winners, and Mrs. Sherri Berry for 100 percent attendance at the most recent Parent Teacher Conferences. Sharnae Pegues, Coffee High student, was recognized for being named the local and state Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year. To celebrate the Douglas-Coffee County Animal Shelter’s transition to new management, an open house and ribbon cutting was held on Friday afternoon, April 28. New managers Chuck and Stacy Jones and family have extensive experience in animal care and are eager to serve our community. The Jones family welcomed visitors on Friday afternoon by serving hot dogs with all the trimmings and provided tours throughout the facility. Competitions include District Project Achievement (DPA), poultry judging, livestock shows (cattle, goats, hogs, and horses), and target sports contests (archery, air pistol, air rifle, 22 rifle, BB rifle, and shotgun). Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is pleased to announce that the Georgia Driver’s Education Commission has scholarships available for the Driver’s Education program. The scholarship covers the full fee of $350, so there is no cost to the parent. Joshua’s Law requires 30 hours of classroom instruction and six additional hours of drive time with an instructor to receive a Class D license. Participants must be at least 15 years of age and possess a learner’s permit. Registrations and scholarship applications must be completed online. A multi-agency investigation into cocaine distribution in Coffee County led to the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker in Broxton over the weekend. Agents with the GBI’s Southeast Regional Drug Enforcement Office, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas – Coffee Drug Unit, and Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 99 Sheppard Street, Lot 12, on Saturday, April 29, a residence located across the street from Broxton – Mary Hayes Elementary School. Coffee County sheriff’s authorities are investigating the death of a man killed after being struck by a train late Saturday night. Coffee County deputies, along with emergency medical personnel, local fire units, and the Georgia State Patrol, responded to Pecan Grove Lane, off Highway 32 West, around 11 p.m. on April 29 in reference a pedestrian being hit. On arrival, authorities discovered a white male, later identified as 52-year-old Richard Hall, deceased and lying under a train. Detectives from the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Investigations Division responded and conducted an on-scene investigation, including obtaining statements from individuals familiar with the victim. The Coffee High VEX Robotics team members are one-percenters. The robotics team finished between 192nd and 198th in the world last week at the world championships in Louisville, Kentucky. There were nearly 20,000 robots at the competition. CHS’s finish of six wins to four losses put them in the top one percent of robotics team in the world. The team consists of captains Diego Escobar and Alana Atkinson, and members Xavian Woodberry, Nabil Patel, Leana Atkinson, Samina Patel, Paulina Escobar, Netra Ghandi, Cheyenne Stone, and Gina Rosier.
