Billy Charles Harper, age 63, of Pearson, GA, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at his residence following a brief illness. Mr. Harper was born on January 21, 1954, in Dade City, FL to the late Johnny Harper and Beatrice Stevens Harper. Survivors include: his daughter, Amber Nicole Harper Stuart of Bristol, VA; brother, Jimmy Harper of Pearson, GA; five sisters, Margaret Moody of Homerville, GA, Elizabeth Burney of Falkville, AL, Geneva Hardee of Homerville, GA, Evelyn Taylor of Nashville, GA, and Barbara Harper of Douglas, GA; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The City of Douglas Utilities Department will recognize its utility linemen on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 with a special luncheon for employees in the Douglas Utilities Department. Douglas Utilities employ 10 linemen in the department. Several of these linemen have helped other communities in our state this year following severe weather. Douglas linemen have helped electricity be restored in Albany three times, Thomasville two times, and Ellaville once following storm disasters this year for approximately a total of 23 days. “We are very proud of the work that our City of Douglas Linemen perform each day,” says Mayor Tony Paulk.…

First Academy will be offering a half day Pre-K program and a full day Pre-K program for the 2017-18 school year. Doug Wasden, headmaster at First Academy, said, “We have had a huge interest in our Pre-K program this year. Most parents are looking for a full day program, but we have many who are not quite ready for their child to attend a full day of school so the half day option will be available.” First Academy only has eight available spots left in its full day program. Competitions include District Project Achievement (DPA), poultry judging, livestock shows (cattle, goats, hogs, and horses), and target sports contests (archery, air pistol, air rifle, .22 rifle, BB rifle, and shotgun). The CCA boys and girls tennis teams had a dominant performance at this year’s region tournament. The boy’s doubles team of Drew Roberson and Tyler Corsa placed 1st. First year player Payton Bradshaw came in a surprising 2nd, upsetting Robert Toombs 2nd seed Tim Waller to advance to the finals. Members of Team A from Lowndes High School captured first place in the annual Mathematics Tournament held recently on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus. A total of 114 students from seven high schools – Brantley, Charlton, Georgia Christian, Lowndes, Pierce, Valdosta, and Ware – competed in the event. Students participated in individual and team competitions. The individual competition featured a 75-minute, 40-question multiple choice exam that covered topics in the high school curriculum – algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus. South Georgia State College (SGSC) students Loren Mertz of Nahunta and Kelsey Smith of Douglas were named to the All-Georgia Academic Team, a program sponsored by two-year college presidents, the national honor society for two-year colleges Phi Theta Kappa, and community college state associations. Mertz and Smith are members of Phi Theta Kappa’s Kappa Sigma chapter on the Douglas Campus.
