CLOVERLEAF 4-H DANCE Our staff would like to thank the volunteer and teen leaders who helped chaperon the Cloverleaf 4-H Dance on February 16. Your help was greatly appreciated. Mr. James E. Knight, III, age 54 of Nicholls passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, in Newton County, following a brief illness. He was born Sept. 10, 1962 to the late James Everett Knight, II and the late Frances Inez Simmons Knight. Survivors include: 1 Son: James Everett Knight, IV of Newnan, Ga.; Siblings: Chris Jones of Nicholls, Ga.; Warren Sterling of Austin, Texas; Cathy Benson of Ambrose, Ga.; 1 Grandson.; Several Uncles, Aunts, Cousins and Friends. West Green Elementary School recently celebrated School Bus Driver Appreciation Week. The faculty, staff, and students showed their love and appreciation for the bus drivers by presenting each with a basket full of goodies, including a card signed by all the students who ride the bus. The South Georgia State College Hawks baseball team split a double-header against Thomas University JV in Thomasville winning game one 12 – 1 and losing game two 2 – 1. The Hawks dominated the opener by collecting eleven hits and twelve runs. The biggest inning for SGSC was thanks to a single by Chase Hinson, a double by Jacob Schmidt, and a triple by KC Brown. Zaquavian Smith led all scorers with 23 points, and the South Georgia State College Hawks survived a furious second half comeback by Central Georgia Tech to beat the Titans 77-69. The City of Douglas and Douglas Coffee County Chamber of Commerce have formed a relationship with Broadcast South, LLC and WDMG 97.9 to host a weekly community news show titled “Community Connection.” The show will consist of either a City of Douglas spokesperson or Chamber of Commerce spokesperson sharing news and information about what is going on in Douglas-Coffee County. The Douglas Police Department will be starting a program in an effort to reduce the number of thefts committed in the City of Douglas. The program involves officers identifying targets that are desirable to criminals and notifying the owners of the property. “By implementing this new program, we hope to bring awareness to areas that could aid in criminal activities,” says Chief Gary Casteloes. “Our goal is to notify property owners so that they will take the preventative actions to help us keep our neighborhoods safe.
