Each nine weeks, students at West Green Elementary have the opportunity to earn a special reward called “Pizza with the Principal” at the end of the grading period. There were first, second, and fifth grade students who earned the reward for the end of the second nine weeks. The first grade students who earned the reward have learned at least 600 sight words. With the 2017 season approaching, South Georgia State College’s head softball coach Nicki Levering has high expectations for her squad. Returning are four starters from the 2016 GCAA Regular Season Championship squad including GCAA First Team All-Region players Chelsea Lyons and Megan Farmer along with GCAA Second Team All-Region outfielder Halie Pearce. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Fatality Review Unit hosted an event on Thursday, Jan. 19, to announce the planned distribution of 300 demonstration dolls to law enforcement agencies throughout the state for use in the investigation of serious child injury and/or death cases. The dolls are the approximate dimensions of a 3-month old baby and are a realistic tool for investigators in reenacting and photographing incident scenes. South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) O’Showen Williams has been named the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Player of the Week. A 5’11” freshman from Macon, Ga., Williams averaged 24 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in conference games against Central Georgia Tech and Gordon State. For the season, Williams is averaging 15.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. He is third overall in assists (90) and fifth in free throw percentage (78.6). Mr. John Henry “Pee Wee” Merritt, age 82, of Ambrose passed away, Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, following a short illness. He was born July 22, 1934 to the late Ira Merritt and the late Pearlie Smith Merritt. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Merritt Glenn. Mrs. Willie Grace Fussell, age 79, of Ambrose, GA passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Haven Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida following a brief illness. She was known for dedication to God, her church home and her family. She was a member of Mt. Union Primitive Baptist Church in Ambrose. Willie Grace was born to the late Wilson Harper and Alda Vickers Harper of Wray, Georgia, a farmer and homemaker respectively, in Ocilla, Georgia, on November 20, 1937.
