Indian Creek Elementary School held its annual Spelling Bee Thursday, November 3, 2016. Participants from fourth grade were Adia Hines, Abby Wright, Edwin Garcia, Jaimie Hutcheson, Riley Davis, Jake Grantham, Brylee Clements, Nora Lott, Miguel Gonzalez, and Izaiah Walker. Fifth grade participants were Chavez Johnson, Lilana Dominguez, Stephanie Castro, C.J. Hobbs, Eli Stodghill, Nathan Cooper, Majesty Clemmons, and Graham Lott. The top three spellers will represent Indian Creek Elementary School at the County Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 26. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…it’s Westside Superhero Readers! Students at Westside Elementary School are using their super reading powers to read, read, read. Each grade level is working to accumulate a set number of “words read” by the end of the year in order to reach the school-wide goal of 25,000,000 words! Principal Wendy Jowers spearheaded this initiative in order to get students excited about reading and to increase reading Lexile levels. Westside Elementary staff was treated to a delicious meal from The Olive Garden provided by The Howard Center for Women on Tuesday, November 1. Each staff member not only enjoyed the catered meal, but walked away with a burlap tote bag, a t-shirt, and entered his/her name for a drawing for a Michael Kors bag. Pre-K classes at Indian Creek Elementary have been learning about community helpers. On Thursday, October 20, the firemen from the City of Douglas visited to teach the students about fire safety. On Oct. 28, the EMTS from Coffee Regional Medical Center visited to teach us about their jobs. They demonstrated how they help people that are sick or hurt. Cory Baldwin could not have asked for a better way to open South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball season. Three players scored 20 or more points, and three school records were broken Wednesday night as the Hawks (1-0) dominated the Martinique National Team in Douglas, 148-29. Shaquille Williams led the Hawks with 27 points and shot 70 percent from the three-point line. O’Showen Williams finished with 22 points and shot 67 percent from the three-point line. The PlanFirst designation recognizes communities for successful comprehensive plan implementation efforts over many years. The prestigious designation enables the City of Douglas to take advantage of various incentives offered through the program which will be in effect for a three-year period. The City of Douglas will be doing its part to make the holiday season special for residents of Georgia’s hospitals serving persons with developmental disabilities and behavioral health needs.
