Grady Sanford, age 89, of Warner Robins, Ga passed away on Monday, December 12, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro, Ga. following an extended illness. Mr. Sanford was born on October 31, 1927, in Milan, Ga. to the late Sidney Thomas Sanford and Cynthia Hammock Sanford. Survivors include: his two daughters, Rosemary (Phillip) Jackson of Eatonton, Ga. and Rhonda Sanford of Warner Robins, Ga.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. Tuesday marked the grand opening for two new vocational schools here in Georgia, but the setting might not be what you expect. CoreCivic’s Wheeler County and Coffee County Correctional Facilities are now home to brand new centers offering courses in gas metal arc welding and diesel truck maintenance. Inmate students can earn certificates from nearby Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and Oconee Fall Line Technical College, which are running the programs and supplying the instructors. South Georgia State College’s Zaquavian Smith has been named the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s (GCAA) Division I Player of the Week for the second time this season. A 6’0” redshirt sophomore from Statesboro, Ga., Smith leads the GCAA in scoring, averaging 20.1 points per game. He has averaged shooting 49 percent from the field, 40 percent from the three-point line, and 74 percent from the free throw line. As their December service project, Coffee Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society members chose to serve the Douglas community by participating in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Drive.
