Jerry Spikes, age 73, of Douglas, Ga. passed away on Monday, November 21, 2016, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Spikes was born on July 23, 1943, in Douglas, Ga. to the late Joseph Wilson Spikes and Norma Virginia Lewis Spikes. Survivors include: his wife, Judy Spikes of Douglas, Ga.; two sons, Chip Spikes of Douglas, Ga. and Mark (April) Spikes of Douglas, Ga.; three grandchildren, Adalyn Spikes, Jackson Spikes, and Walker Altman; brother, Joe (Sissy) Spikes of Ormond Beach, Fla.; brother-in-law, Jamey Altman of Douglas, Ga.; several nieces and nephews. The South Georgia State College Hawks held the New Rock Prep Sports Academy Wolverines to seven points in the first 13 minutes and built a 21-point halftime lead en route to a 76-56 win Monday night. Zaire Cook led the Hawks (7-1) with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Zaquavian Smith finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and seven assists. SGSC’s swim team travelled to Berry College in Rome, Ga., this weekend and participated in a two-day, three-session dual meet. The Division III Vikings of Berry edged both the Hawks men and women in the meet in the total team score. Coffee Middle School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) attended the Fall Motivational Rally on Oct. 13 and submitted an entry for the T-shirt design contest and a poster for the state project called The TREY Project. On November 14, 2016, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) placed U-47700 into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. By its ability to emergency schedule controlled substances, in April, the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy placed U-47700 under Schedule I drug. U-47700 is a synthetic opioid originally developed as a research chemical that is actively being abused by many. Some of the side effects include sedation, constipation, and respiratory depression which could be fatal. It is also reported to be 7-10 times stronger than heroin. Fatalities as a result of consuming this drug have been noted throughout the country. …

The Builders Club at Coffee Middle School sponsored a canned food drive that resulted in four turkey-hat wearers! The cluster that donated the most canned food per grade level won the turkey hat for the day. The students selected the teacher who would wear the hat. Clusters 6A (Mr. Daniels), 7A (Mr. Stevens), 8B (Mrs. Pace), and Connections G-wing (Mrs. S. Adams) were the winners. We appreciate you being such good sports!
