Some of the cast from Because of Winn Dixie asked Mrs. Fussell’s class to join them for a reading celebration. In attendance were Gloria Dump, Otis, Miss Franny Block, Sweetie Pie Thomas, and the third graders from Ambrose Elementary. The students enjoyed dump punch, lozenges, egg sandwiches, and pickles for a treat while visiting with the special guests in Gloria Dump’s back yard. Mrs. Fussell’s third grade students have been working diligently preparing a Google slide presentation to summarize their understanding of their latest chapter book. – Submitted

NATIONAL 4-H WEEK Each year, 4-H members, volunteer leaders, and extension staff members celebrate National 4-H Week during the first full week of October. This year, 4-H Week is October 2 – 8. Currently, there are approximately 1,150 4-H members in Coffee County. These 4-H members can participate in events such as Project Achievement, livestock shows, judging events, target sports, community service activities, and much more. 4-H is open to students in grades 4 through 12. Floriece Spivey, age 85, of Ambrose, Ga passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2016, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Spivey was born on November 3, 1930, in Douglas, Ga to the late Charlton William Burkett and Annie Lee Stapleton Burkett. Sam Patterson was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Mr. Patterson gave a presentation on the restoration of a wood and canvas canoe that was made in 1945. After the meeting, he showed everyone the completed canoe. Pre-K students in Mrs. Milhollin’s, Mrs. Stella’s, and Mrs. Shook’s class at Indian Creek Elementary have been learning about families. Grandparent’s Day was celebrated on Monday, Sept. 12, and the class enjoyed breakfast with their grandparents.
