Lois Lee Williams Kirkland, age 98, of Douglas, GA passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at Shady Acres following an extended illness. Mrs. Kirkland was born on September 12, 1918, in Hampton Springs, FL to the late Gentry Williams and Ida Hall Williams. West Green Elementary students recently participated in a fundraiser in which they sold cookie dough, and the top five sellers were rewarded with prizes. The top sellers were: #1 Eady Wilcox, who sold 28 tubs #2 Rylee Spivey, who sold 22 tubs #3 Judson Lott and Carter McMillan, who each sold 20 tubs #4 Will Auger, who sold 19 tubs. A drawing for several small prizes was also held for students who participated. All three grade levels at Coffee Middle School did an amazing job raising money recently for childhood cancer awareness by dropping change in the jars during the month of September. A total of $3583.85 was collected from this one activity! Congratulations to the seventh grade for being our top contributor–$1991.15! The eighth grade gave $1310.82, and the sixth grade gave $281.88. Other activities are ongoing, so our CMS total amount is still growing. We appreciate everyone’s support and willingness to go the extra mile to help find a cure for childhood cancer. – Submitted
Cory Baldwin, head men’s basketball coach at South Georgia State College, has announced the addition of Sam Watson as an assistant coach for the 2016-2017 season. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Watson played basketball at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (NCAA Division I) before transferring to Young Harris College (NCAA Division II) to finish his career. “I am thankful to be part of the hard working and passionate basketball family at SGSC,” said Watson.
