As registration continues for the Annual Festival of Lights Christmas Parade, parade officials are releasing rules, regulations, and important information regarding the parade. The primary mission of the Annual Festival of Lights Parade is to provide a safe, enjoyable, and quality family environment, in and on the streets of Douglas. Jerry Spikes, age 73, of Douglas, Ga. passed away on Monday, November 21, 2016, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Spikes was born on July 23, 1943, in Douglas, Ga. to the late Joseph Wilson Spikes and Norma Virginia Lewis Spikes. The South Georgia State College Hawks held the New Rock Prep Sports Academy Wolverines to seven points in the first 13 minutes and built a 21-point halftime lead en route to a 76-56 win Monday night. Zaire Cook led the Hawks (7-1) with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Zaquavian Smith finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and seven assists. Rosemary Nahra Cato, age 79, of West Green, Ga. passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016, at Satilla Hospice in Waycross, Ga. Mrs. Cato was born on March 30, 1937, in Douglas, Ga. to the late John Nahra and Louis Farris Nahra. SGSC’s swim team travelled to Berry College in Rome, Ga., this weekend and participated in a two-day, three-session dual meet. The Division III Vikings of Berry edged both the Hawks men and women in the meet in the total team score. The Hawks men were leading the meet going to into the final session on Saturday, but Berry came out on top. “We swam well and won a large number of events,” commented Head Coach CM Jenkins, “but their depth and numbers in the individual events and relays were too much for us to contend with.” Leading the Hawks for…

Coffee Middle School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) attended the Fall Motivational Rally on Oct. 13 and submitted an entry for the T-shirt design contest and a poster for the state project called The TREY Project. In November, FBLA attended the Fall Leadership Rally in Athens, Ga. at The Classic Center and learned we were one of the top competitors with both entries. Indian Creek Elementary celebrated its faculty and staff, past and present, during American Education Week. On Thursday, we were honored to host our annual Retired Teachers Luncheon. On November 14, 2016, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) placed U-47700 into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. By its ability to emergency schedule controlled substances, in April, the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy placed U-47700 under Schedule I drug. U-47700 is a synthetic opioid originally developed as a research chemical that is actively being abused by many. Some of the side effects include sedation, constipation, and respiratory depression which could be fatal. It is also reported to be 7-10 times stronger than heroin. Fatalities as a result of consuming this drug have been noted throughout the country. …
