Douglas Mayor Tony Paulk recently signed a proclamation declaring October 27, 2016 as Passionately Pink Day. Each year during the month of October, Beta Sigma Phi hosts various events in our community for breast cancer awareness. Beta Sigma Phi raises funds to promote awareness of breast cancer, support of those affected by breast cancer, and to help fund research for a cure. This year’s Beta Sigma Phi’s Theme for Passionately Pink Month is “The Tie that Binds – Passion for a Cure”. During Fire Prevention Safety Week, Douglas/Coffee County Firefighters visited Coffee County Pre-K Students in all elementary schools. The firefighters met the children and taught ways to be fire wise and always safe from fires. The firefighters reminded the young students in the event of a fire in their home, “Don’t Hide, Go Outside!”. Students made pledges to be “Fire Wise” and not to play with matches or other fire products. The students and staff at Indian Creek Elementary celebrated Georgia Pre-K Week Oct. 3-7. During the weeklong celebration, many leaders from our community visited Mrs. Milhollin, Mrs. Lesley Shook, and Mrs. Stella’s classroom where they read to the Pre-K students. Georgia Pre-K Week allows the community to experience firsthand the quality learning that takes place in classrooms across Coffee County and the state. The City of Douglas Public Information Department, 63rd Preservation Society, and Airbase Preservation Committee are proud to announce the cadets from the 63rd Army-Air Force Flight Training Detachment will return to Douglas for their reunion Oct. 19–22, 2016. Plans are underway to create another memorable reunion for these cadets and their families. During World War II, the Raymond Richardson Aviation Company established the 63rd Army Air Force Flight Training Pilot School which trained over 10,000 cadets on combative flight skills and experiences. As the traditional Halloween day quickly approaches on Monday, October 31, the City of Douglas Police Department urges parents and neighborhoods to use cautions for personal safety and especially for kids by offering these safety tips. The City asks that Trick-Or- Treating take place between the hours of 6 to 9 p.m. The Douglas Police Department asks that parents do not allow their kids to be out past 9 p.m. so that residents in participating neighborhoods will not be disturbed past nine o’clock. Hunter Shelton, a student in Mrs. Dana Miller’s and Mrs. Janet Capps’ class at Indian Creek Elementary, brought his pet snake to share with the kindergarten classes during “S” week. His name is “Sneaky Snake,” and he is a python. We learned many interesting facts about snakes. Thank you, Hunter, for sharing your pet with us.
