On Wednesday, May 18, Westside Elementary School students, teachers, staff, and parents were excited to welcome the seniors of 2016 back to where their educational career began. Students and staff excitedly lined the hallways awaiting the former “Wildcats” return. As the seniors made their way through the halls en route to the gym for one last “crossing of the bridge,” Westside Wildcats cheered them on with banners, well wishes, and high-fives! Now that summer is here, children are more likely to be left home alone and unsupervised during parental work hours. Children love being out of school for the summer, but, long summer days can sometimes make children bored and restless. The City of Douglas Police Department would like to offer some tips to parents for children during the summer months. Before leaving your child alone, parents should make sure their child is mature and old enough to stay home alone. Mr. Michael Carroll Strickland, age 67, of Douglas passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the Coffee Regional Medical Center, following a short illness. He was born August 25, 1948 to the late Michael Hoke “Pete” Strickland and the late Bertha Paulk Strickland. Mrs. Scottie Adams coordinates Box Tops for Education, Labels for Education, collects tabs from canned drinks, as well as Coke caps from bottled Coke products. Cory Baldwin, head men’s basketball coach at South Georgia State College (SGSC), will host his seventh annual “Baldwin’s Ballers” basketball camp this summer. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-15. Four-day sessions are scheduled for the weeks of June 13, 20, July 11, and 18 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on SGSC’s Waycross Campus. Each session is $80 per camper, which includes a t-shirt. A discount is available to campers who attend multiple sessions as well as family members of SGSC employees. The City of Douglas was recently contacted by the Camera Ready Program concerning a possible film location for an upcoming television series for Amazon. The “Zelda” project will film in Savannah for the first two episodes and will move on to New York City. The request from the Georgia Camera Ready program was a location request for early barracks that were located within 1-1.5 hrs. away from Savannah.
