The Douglas City Cemetery Advisory Board recently received approval from the mayor and commissioners to establish an area in which to scatter cremains. Prior to now, the cemetery had no area established for cremains scattering, and the board will now move forward to create a scatter garden, which will be known as the Olive Garden. Other cemeteries throughout Georgia in recent years have opened areas to scatter cremated remains. These areas are called scattering gardens, and they provide choices for personal memorization within this dedicated area. Mayor Tony L. Paulk and Commissioner Mike Gowen recently recognized Eagle Scout Candidate Caleb Strom for his commitment to the Wheeler Park Disc Golf Course project. With assistance from family members, troop members, church members, and friends, Caleb designed and built a 9-hole disc golf course at Wheeler Park. The course includes a detailed map of the course, as well as an outdoor display board to protect the map from the elements. In addition to the display board and detailed map, the course has course markers that identify each hole. – Submitted
After an opening game that saw South Georgia State College (SGSC) muster eight hits against Darton State but lose by a score of 17-5, the Hawks (23-16, 8-4) came back with victories in the next two games with scores of 7-4 and 7-3. The City of Douglas Visitor Information Center hosted a familiarization (FAM) tour of Douglas with Georgia visitor information specialists from Lake Park and Savannah on Monday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 12. The purpose of a FAM tour is to allow employees of Georgia visitor information centers the opportunity to discover other regions of the state so representatives can speak to tourists about those regions and encourage visits to those areas. Governor Nathan Deal and Speaker of the House David Ralston will be in Douglas for the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at Premium Peanut. Deal and Ralston are just two of the many elected officials who will attend the ceremony to be held at the plant on Barrington Road on Friday, April 22, at noon. The Beef Industry Scholarship Challenge (BISC) is a unique contest that focuses on the student’s knowledge and skills in all areas of beef production management. Each year, the Georgia Jr. Cattlemen’s Association puts on the challenge that awards over $10,000 in scholarships for students to pursue a college degree of their choice. The challenge was divided between Sr. (11th and 12th Grades) and Jr. Divisions (9th and 10th grades).
