Three members of South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team have received postseason honors from the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). Tyrone Sam, a 6’6” sophomore from Roswell, Ga., was selected to the GCAA All-Tournament Team following his performance during the tournament quarterfinals and semifinals. For the season, Sam averaged 25.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. “T-Sam showed how good he was in the tournament. He put up numbers against two very good defensive teams that were focused on stopping him,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. Byron Mullican, Lt. Governor – Georgia Kiwanis District 17, presented the Douglas Kiwanis Club with a Distinguished Club Award for 2014-15 Tuesday, March 15 at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Mr. Mullican congratulated the club for completing four of the five objectives required to earn the honor. Those objectives being: 1. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College President Tina K. Anderson announces the promotion of Timothy Allmond as the new Chief of Police. Chief Allmond will have his main office on the Coffee Campus in Douglas, but will also be working at the other campuses of the college. Chief Allmond has been in law enforcement for 15 years, having served his entire career with the City of Douglas Police Department. The South Georgia State College baseball team was victorious in both games of a doubleheader March 11. The Hawks (14-12, 1-0) defeated the Morton College Panthers to increase their winning streak to six games. In the first of the two games, it was a close victory with the Hawks winning 6-5. The second half of the doubleheader gave SGSC a more commanding lead with a final score of 5-1. Members of the Coffee High School Student Council recently participated in a service project by making around 500 “Boo Boo Bunnies” for every Pre-K student in the Coffee County School System. The “Boo Boo Bunnies” are made of a soft wash cloth that has been twisted into the shape of a small baby bunny complete with eyes, ears, nose and a round fuzzy tail. The “Boo Boo Bunnies” hold a small piece of ice in the middle of the creation, and the young child is able to hold the ice inside the bunny up to his or her area with…

The event will be held in the Peterson Hall Art Gallery on SGSC’s Douglas Campus. It is free and open to the public. Ray is a southern Georgia native, writer, naturalist, and activist. She holds an MFA from the University of Montana and has been awarded two honorary doctorates – one from Unity College in Maine and the other from LaGrange College in Georgia. CMS recently kicked off its mentoring program with keynote speaker Dr. Rowland Cummings. This program is designed to target male students who have been identified as needing additional support in the school setting. A mentor from CMS is assigned to each student and will provide support in any area that the student may need. Headed by Mrs. Stephanie Gooden, with collaboration from Assistant Principal Randy Drew and API Rontee Barnes, it is our hope that this pilot initiative will set the foundation for a large scale mentoring program in the near future. – Submitted

He was born April 27, 1939 to the late Wylie L. Swails and the late Vashti Hutcheson Swails.
