Leland Smith, age 84, of Douglas, GA passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Pruitt Health-Ocilla following an extended illness. Dr. Morris Leis, Coffee County School Superintendent, recently participated in a congressional briefing at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Personally invited by AASA: the School Superintendents Association, Dr. Leis traveled to Washington, D.C. on April 19 and met with members of Congress. Dr. Leis first met with the executive director of the Food Research Action Center at their headquarters in Washington to discuss the importance of the Community Eligibility Program (School Breakfast and Lunch Program). Virgil Hulon Barksdale, 90 of Broussard, LA passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2016 in Lafayette, LA. Mr. Barksdale was born on August 9, 1925 in Fort Valley, GA to the late Virgil and Elizabeth Smith Barksdale. Coming off a highly successful regular season, the South Georgia State College Lady Hawks (32-9, 12-2) went into the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Region 17 Tournament as the top seed and regular season champions. Wiregrass Technical College Campus Police Chief Timothy Allmond attended the Chief Executive Training Class for newly appointed chiefs of police and heads of law enforcement agencies at the Dr. Curtis E. McClung Training Center in Duluth, GA., April 4 – 13. This training allows Chief Allmond with the knowledge and skills to be able to assist in providing a safe environment on each one of Wiregrass’ campuses.
