Douglas city commissioners recently approved a private fire hydrant ordinance created to address fire hydrants located on private property. A private fire hydrant is a valved connection to a water main for the purpose of supplying water to a fire hose or other fire protection apparatus and is not located within the right of way of the City of Douglas. The purpose of the ordinance is to provide standards and requirements for the inspection, testing, maintenance, correction and repair of fire hydrants located on private property within the city limits. Three members of South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team have received postseason honors from the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). Tyrone Sam, a 6’6” sophomore from Roswell, Ga., was selected to the GCAA All-Tournament Team following his performance during the tournament quarterfinals and semifinals. For the season, Sam averaged 25.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. “T-Sam showed how good he was in the tournament. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College President Tina K. Anderson announces the promotion of Timothy Allmond as the new Chief of Police. Chief Allmond will have his main office on the Coffee Campus in Douglas, but will also be working at the other campuses of the college. Chief Allmond has been in law enforcement for 15 years, having served his entire career with the City of Douglas Police Department. He left the police department in August of 2015 and has most recently worked as the criminal justice instructor on the Coffee campus. Prior to his career in law enforcement, he served in…
The South Georgia State College baseball team was victorious in both games of a doubleheader March 11. The Hawks (14-12, 1-0) defeated the Morton College Panthers to increase their winning streak to six games. In the first of the two games, it was a close victory with the Hawks winning 6-5. The second half of the doubleheader gave SGSC a more commanding lead with a final score of 5-1. It became a struggle for the win in game one as the Hawks and Morton College exchanged the lead nine times in eight innings. SGSC finally managed to secure the lead…
Members of the Coffee High School Student Council recently participated in a service project by making around 500 “Boo Boo Bunnies” for every Pre-K student in the Coffee County School System. The “Boo Boo Bunnies” are made of a soft wash cloth that has been twisted into the shape of a small baby bunny complete with eyes, ears, nose and a round fuzzy tail. The “Boo Boo Bunnies” hold a small piece of ice in the middle of the creation, and the young child is able to hold the ice inside the bunny up to his or her area with…
