Coffee Alliance for the Arts, along with Georgia Council for the Arts, sponsored the 2016 Coffee High Arts Week the week of February 22-26 and March 1, 2016. Several Coffee High alumni who are involved with the arts in some way were invited to present to CHS students throughout the week. The Douglas Fire Department responded to a cotton seed fire at one of the local cotton gins approximately two weeks ago. The fire was located in a large pile of cotton seed that had been piled from last year. The Douglas Fire Department and Coffee County Fire Department extinguished the fire as much as possible without removing the smoldering cotton seeds. To completely extinguish smoldering cotton seeds, workers are in the process of removing the cotton seeds one layer at a time. The non-profit Georgia School Nutrition Association (GSNA) has awarded Celeste Williams, manager of Satilla Elementary School, the Manager of the Year Award. The award, considered the highest honor a school nutrition manager can earn, recognizes a cafeteria manager in the state who has demonstrated dedication and ingenuity to improve his or her school meal program. Celeste Williams’ passion and leadership have benefitted the students and staff at Satilla Elementary School. Wednesday afternoon was quite a day for the sophomore players on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) softball team. The Lady Hawks (29-6, 11-1) celebrated Sophomore Day, swept ABAC in a doubleheader (8-0 and 4-2), and clinched the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) regular season championship. The Lady Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the opening game of the doubleheader. With eight runs in the first three innings, the Lady Hawks left no doubt they were out to win the game. Medal of Honor recipient and author General James Livingston recently visited George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWC). Army veteran and history teacher Chanc Logue taught a Medal of Honor advisement class where students explored the important concepts of courage, commitment, sacrifice, patriotism, integrity, and citizenship and how these values can be exemplified in daily life.The Medal of Honor advisement class incorporated video clips about personal accounts of living Medal of Honor recipients. The South Georgia State College baseball team (27-17, 12-5) beat Gordon State in Barnesville, Ga., Tuesday by a score of 6-3. Connor Durden led the Hawks by going 2-for-5 on the day. He doubled in the third inning to post the first two runs of the game. Two more runs came across the plate in the fourth inning for the Hawks. Earl Lowell Brice, Jr., age 79 of Douglas, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Brice was born on May 24, 1936, in McRae to the late Earl Lowell Brice, Sr. and Rebecca Brooks Brice.
