On December 16, Coffee Middle School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes students, along with FCA Director Tommy Watkins, parent volunteers, and community youth pastors handed out approximately 1,000 bibles to students in grades 6-8. Students, parents, churches, and other organizations took part in the community-wide effort to raise $10,000 for the bible distribution at the school. Due to the overwhelming response to the event, all the bibles were all given out, and 500 more have been ordered to be given to students who did not have a chance to receive one. – Submitted

City officials are reminding Douglas residents to adhere to Solid Waste ordinance policies regarding time of placement and time of removal of trash carts. Beginning the evening before, and no later than 6 a.m. on the day of collection, customers should place their container(s) at the curbside in front of the customer’s residence. Tony West, age 75, of Douglas, GA passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. West was born on August 24, 1940, in Douglas, GA to the George West and Nellie Rebecca Burke West. Survivors include: his wife, Judy West of Douglas, GA; daughter, Tonya (Shawn) West of Douglas, GA; three granddaughters, Sarah Grantham, Catherine Grantham and Hanna Gillespie; two grandsons, Skyler McQuaig and Martin McNulty; sister, Lawana Reise of Macon, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Each year, the City of Douglas employees host an annual chili cook-off to raise money for the Georgia Municipal Association’s Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade. Funds raised by City of Douglas and Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce employees benefited patients at Douglas’ Unison Behavorial Health Services and Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah. In a game that featured six ties and 17 lead changes, the South Georgia State College Hawks put together a 28-5 run in the final eight minutes of regulation Thursday night to pull away from the Fort Benning All-Army Team 84-63. Paul Scheeser, Grove City College Southeast Regional Admissions Counselor, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Mr. Scheeser talked about the history of Grove City College, its student body, and its mission. He spoke about higher education and the value Grove City offers its students. Mr. Scheeser travels throughout the southeastern part of the United States to recruit students. Grove City College is a private Christian college located in Western Pennsylvania.
