The City of Douglas and Transwaste are offering a Junk Drop-Off Day on Saturday, February 20 to help citizens get rid of the excess trash. It will be held at Wheeler Park, located on W. Gordon Street, from 8 a.m to noon. A dumpster will be placed to offer residents a way to dispose of large, non-hazardous items and electronic items at no cost. Acceptable brown and white good items include furniture, washing machines, refrigerators, dryers, stoves, microwaves, television, etc. Please drain all chemicals from appliances. The Douglas Police Department is offering a Citizen Police Academy course that will begin Thursday, March 3 at the Douglas Police Department located at 225 W. Bryan Street. The course will last eight (8) weeks, and a light meal and refreshments are provided. The course covers numerous areas and is designed to introduce and inform citizens of the role of law enforcement in the community and familiarize them with some of the applications of law. SGSC’s swim teams soared this past weekend at the Small College Championship Meet held at the SGSC Wellness Center on the Douglas Campus. Both the women’s and men’s teams captured first followed by Thomas University winning second place and Point University in third. Carolyn Ives and Caitlyn Meece both earned three first place individual finishes, while Kiana Ocasio-Molina secured two, and Nikki Daley from Warner Robins won first in the 100 freestyle. Pitcher Gayden Hatcher held up his end of the bargain, but the SGSC Hawks baseball team couldn’t use Hatcher’s strong showing against the University of South Carolina (USC)-Salkehatchie to pull out a win. SGSC lost 2-1 in seven innings in the opening game of the doubleheader Feb. 13 in Allendale, S.C. USC-Salkehatchie had no answer for Hatcher, who kept runners off the base paths during his appearance. Leon Roberts, age 79, of Douglas, GA passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Roberts was born on December 28, 1936, in Nicholls, GA to the late Walter Roberts and Ethel Gilliard Roberts. Effective March 1, the hours of operation at the Douglas Veterans Field Service Office are changing. The office, located at 70 Lockwood Drive, will begin opening to the public at 9 a.m. on weekdays. Closing time (4:30 p.m.) is not changing. The office is closed on weekends. The new schedule is part of a policy change affecting Georgia Department of Veterans Service offices statewide. The later opening is designed to give the department’s service officers more time to focus on administrative duties. Douglas City Clerk Wynetta J. Bolder was sworn in as the 2016 President Elect for the Georgia Municipal Clerks and Finance Officers Association in Macon on Feb. 8. The Georgia Municipal Clerks and Finance Officers Association (GMC/FOA) is a professional association comprised of city clerks and finance officers from across Georgia.
