The Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County will be hosting its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony Tuesday, November 17, at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Coffee County Courthouse. Childhood cancer families will be asked to place a butterfly on the tree to symbolize their child’s status at that time. Gold butterflies are for hope, and blue butterflies symbolize a child currently in treatment. Silver butterflies represent childhood cancer survivors, and white butterflies symbolize our angels who passed away from their childhood cancer diagnosis. South Georgia State College’s trademark defense held USC-Salkehatchie to 14 first half points Tuesday night on the way to a 76-49 win. Tyrone Sam led the Hawks (4-0) with 21 points, two assists, and three steals. Karim Mawuenyega had a complete game of 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Head coach Cory Baldwin said the Hawks’ fourth consecutive win had both its high and low points. On Thursday, Oct. 29, during Red Ribbon Week, Wal-Mart Transportation and Wal-Mart Distribution Center of Douglas donated three Havis K-9 kennels to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Division (currently assigned to the Douglas – Coffee Drug Unit). The donation was in response to the need for the K-9 Division to upgrade the vehicle kennels in use at the time of the request. South Georgia State College’s men’s and women’s swim teams opened their season at home Nov. 7 with a big win against three schools – LaGrange College, Point University, and Thomas University. SGSC finished with a total of 403 points, followed by Thomas University (227), Point University (62), and LaGrange College (44). Leading the Swim Hawks were Carolyn Ives (Carrollton, Ga.) and Mitchell Graham (Columbus, Ga.).
