Longtime Douglas – Coffee Co. Chamber of Commerce President and Economic Development Authority Executive Director Joanne Lewis abruptly tendered her letter of resignation Monday during a meeting of the Chamber executive board and EDA members. After regular business was discussed, Lewis surprised the group by announcing her retirement. In her letter of resignation, Lewis stated: “Since January 12, 2004, I have been employed as Executive Director for the Douglas-Coffee County Economic Development Authority (Authority) and also served as the President of the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce (Chamber). South Georgia State College freshman Shanelle Frederick was selected as the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 21-27. A West Bay, Cayman Islands native, Frederick helped lead the Lady Hawks to a win over Gordon State and to a close match against rival Darton State. Frederick scored a total of six goals and had two assists during the two games. Ms. Betty Carolyn Claxton Johnson, age 78, of Douglas passed away Saturday morning, October 3, 2015 at her residence, following a brief illness. She was born January 24, 1937 to the late William Terrell Solomon and the late Mary Corene Buchan Solomon. Editor’s note: The following letter was submitted to “Douglas Now” Friday afternoon, Oct. 2, 2015, from Waycross Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney John Rumker in reference to an article published Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, in local print media publication, “The Douglas Enterprise.” In the article, the author questions the reason the DA’s office chose to allegedly dismiss several drug charges against Broxton resident David Bennett, who was arrested last month after authorities reportedly discovered a quantity of methamphetamine, marijuana, and other drug-related objects at his residence while officials were overseeing a home eviction.
