Allie Mildred Taylor, age 89, of Douglas, GA passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Taylor was born on May 2, 1925, in Broxton, GA to the late Owen Melton and Leona White Melton. It’s been two years since the tragic death of Edith Sheffield. Although she no longer walks among us, her kind spirit continues to touch those who knew her and even some who did not. That was true when the staff at First National Bank headed up a gift giving campaign in memory of Edith. Family and friends of Edith graciously donated a large flat screen television and a Wal-Mart gift card to Still Waters women’s substance abuse and recovery center. Contractors have been busy this week in Douglas as several local entrepreneurs break ground at Peanut Partners, LLC, a new peanut buying point located on the Sinkhole Road just inside the city limits. The facility will buy peanuts for members at Tifton Quality Peanuts, LLC as well as for outside farmers. Peanuts will be received, weighed, cleaned, dried, inspected, graded and stored at the buying point, which will feature a 10,000 ton storage facility. Beginning March 4, 2015, the City of Douglas will begin using an automated phone calling system to inform utility customers of a delinquency. Once this automated system is active, the City of Douglas will no longer mail delinquent notices to past due utility customers. Using an automated phone calling system will speed up the process of a customer being notified of a past due/delinquent status. It is very important that the city has the best phone number to reach customers. Elected officials from Douglas were among nearly 800 city officials to attend the Georgia Municipal Association’s annual Mayors’ Day Conference in Atlanta Jan. 23-26. Norma Luke, age 93, of Douglas, GA passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Southern Senior Living following an extended illness. Mrs. Luke was born on August 10, 1921, in Broxton, GA to the late William Floyd Lewis and Emma Jane Merritt Lewis. Mrs. Luke was the oldest member of Satilla Baptist Church at the time of her death.
