The following post was written the day after we received the news that we were going to have a Rainbow Baby (the baby born after infant loss…which symbolizes the rainbow after the storm). Special thanks to Ms. Leanne Weatherford with Fender-Goggans Orthodontics for presenting a dental health lesson to Westside fourth and fifth grade students. Ms. Weatherford explained how to take care of our teeth and she facilitated the students in conducting experiments using boiled eggs soaked in various liquids that students cleaned with toothbrushes. Officials with the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit are continuing to report numerous arrests throughout the month of October. On October 17, the Douglas Police Department responded to a shoplifting complaint at Wal-Mart. During a brief investigation, DPD officers located Oxycontin tablets and marijuana on the suspect, identified as Christopher Allen Dean. Officers turned the case over to Douglas – Coffee Drug Unit detectives. Dean was arrested for Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana and Theft by Shoplifting (Misdemeanor). Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, David Ralston, was in attendance Tuesday in Douglas at a luncheon hosted by Rep. Chad Nimmer of Blackshear, Rep. Jay Roberts of Ocilla, and Senator Tyler Harper of Ocilla.
The City of Douglas has received a Land and Water Grant from the Department of Natural Resources. The grant is in the amount of $100,000 and will be used for the renovation of tennis courts at Davis Wade Park and Wheeler Park. The City will provide matching funds in the amount of $100,000 included in SPLOST for recreation projects. “We are delighted to receive this grant to help with the renovation costs of the tennis courts located at Davis Wade and Wheeler Park,” says Dale Batten, Community Development Director. “The bid process will begin soon. Thanks to a grant by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Satilla Regional Library in Douglas now has a new wireless computer classroom. Beginning computer classes will be offered on the following dates: 10/31 at 1 p.m. – Computer Basics11/7 at 1 p.m. – Internet Basics11/14 at 1 p.m. – Email Basics Class size is limited to 10 and spaces are on a first come, first serve basis.
