The Douglas Rotary and Exchange Clubs held a joint meeting on Thursday and welcomed guest speaker Mr. Brian Owens, Commissioner of the Georigia Department of Corrections. Mr. Owens discussed the decline in prison population as a result of state efforts to rehabilitate those incarcerated for drug convictions and other non-violent crimes. Commissioner Owens explained that the state is constantly working to improve job options for felons. The Douglas Police Department and Douglas Fire Department are working together to continue investigations into criminal activities which have occurred over the last few months. The Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP) is a non-profit collaborative organized to promote, support, and enhance community literacy efforts locally. Communities participating in the program analyze community needs, create awareness of the needs, ensure that learning opportunities are offered, and evaluate progress so that the majority of citizens needing to improve their skills do so within 10 years. The Douglas Kiwanis Club will have its annual chicken que on Tuesday, September 30. The meal will consist of half chicken bbq plates with baked beans, coleslaw, bread, and cake. The cost is $9. Checks should be made payable to the Kiwanis Club. Cash will be accepted and all proceeds will go to fund Kiwanis youth projects in Douglas and Coffee County.
