A 68-year-old Douglas man remains in the Coffee County Jail after he was captured attempting to flee a deputy. When the officer finally ended the pursuit via PIT maneuver, the suspect, identified as Carl Leslie Chaney, 68, allegedly had methamphetamine in his possession.
On July 14, 2026, at nearly 1 a.m., a deputy was patrolling near the Bowens Mill Highway when he saw a Mercury Grand Marquis fail to maintain its lane, according to a sheriff’s office report. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle but it did not stop, eventually accelerating to upwards of 80 mph.
The car traveled to Rocky Pond Road where the officer ended the pursuit with a PIT maneuver. Another officer had joined pursuit and assisted with the incident. The driver was taken into custody without any further incident.
After the pursuit ended, the officers deployed a K9, which alerted on the Grand Marquis. Officers found suspected marijuana and methamphetamine in the car. Chaney was arrested and booked into the Coffee County Jail on several traffic violations as well as possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance and fleeing/attempting to elude an officer.
