City of Douglas officials announced the city will be celebrating Georgia Cities Week the week of October 3-9, 2021.  The City of Douglas will be hosting a variety of events during Georgia Cities Week.  The theme of this year’s Georgia Cities Week is “Shaping the Future.”

“We’re very proud of our city and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Mayor Tony Paulk.  “Cities provide the services and infrastructure to help businesses grow and set the stage for events where families and individuals can gather as a community.”

To kickoff events for Georgia Cities Week, the Public Works Department will offer Tire Amnesty Week that will be held on Monday, October 3 – Friday, October 8, 8:30am-4:30pm.   Tire Amnesty Week, will allow citizens of Douglas to dispose of up to 4 tires per resident at the City Pole Yard located at 670 S. Pearl Avenue, adjacent to the Post Office.  Proof of residency is required.  No commercial and no farm tires will be accepted.  Rubber only – no rims.

Fall Junk Free Week will be Monday, October 3 through Friday, October 8, 2021, between the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm, at the City Pole Yard located at 670 South Pearl Avenue, adjacent to the Post Office.  For citizens inside the city limits of Douglas, fees will be waived, during this one week, on big household and junk items.  This will not apply to tires or hazardous chemicals.  Items can be dropped off at the City of Douglas Pole Yard (off Pearl Avenue, adjacent to the post office).  Citizens must provide a copy of their utility bill as residency proof.

The City of Douglas Customer Service Department will host its Customer Employee Appreciation month during the month of October.  Customers will be asked to vote for their favorite Customer Service employee.  If a customer votes for their favorite employee, they will be registered for one of three $100 credits that will be given away on Friday, October 29, 2021.

On Saturday, October 9, 2021, during Faith and Blue Weekend, the public is invited to come out and cheer your favorite law enforcement officer at the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event. The “Walk a Mile In Her Shoes” event is a collaboration with law enforcement agencies and the Magnolia House to raise awareness for domestic violence against women.  Officers and Pastors will walk in high heels beginning at Central Square Gym, go east on Bryan St. to Columbia Ave., (on the sidewalks) in front of Police Department, then north on Columbia to W. Ashley St. and back to the Central Square Complex for an awards ceremony.  Ending the Faith & Blue weekend on Sunday, October 10, churches in Coffee County are asked to recognize law enforcement officers and to collect donations for the Magnolia House’s Purple Bag Challenge.  The Police Department will coordinate with churches to pick up all donations the following week and arrange delivery to the Magnolia House.

Cities across Georgia will be celebrating Georgia Cities Week, sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA), to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide. Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and consulting services to its 537 member cities.
