One of the occupants of a vehicle involved in a frightful traffic accident on Christmas Eve has passed away.
Thursday, December 28, 2023, Jazmine Simpson, 26, succumbed to injuries suffered in the crash, which happened on Highway 441 at the entrance to GreeneTree Lakes subdivision. The accident took place around 3 p.m.
Simpson was suffering from an asthma attack at her home when her mother, Lawanda Leggett, put her in their car, along with three siblings, and headed to Coffee Regional Medical Center. Leggett had her hazard lights on and was driving at a high rate of speed. Witnesses who saw the accident reported that Leggett attempted to pass a vehicle near the entrance to GreeneTree.
When she left her lane of travel, there was a white BMW SUV waiting to turn left into GreeneTree. Leggett’s vehicle crashed head-on into the BMW, spinning it 180 degrees. The driver of the BMW was shaken up but did not have visible injuries. Everyone in the car was injured, the most serious of which were Leggett, Simpson, and a six-year-old sibling, who will be permanently disabled as a result of the crash, according to a social media post describing the occupants’ injuries. Thursday, Simpson passed away as a result of her injuries.
Leggett remains in the hospital as she recovers from serious injuries to both of her legs. She is expected to face a number of charges related to the accident, including vehicular homicide, when doctors release her. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident; officers from that agency will make the final determination regarding charges.
