Senior Kate Merritt (1600 meters and 3200 meters) and two relay teams — the boys 4×100 and 4×200, both comprised of Travis Adams, JaQuan Harrison, Anthony Paulk and Tyrese Woodgett — qualified for the state track meet at Sectionals last week at Union Grove High School. The state meet will take place in Columbus at Kinnett Stadium later this week.

The two boys relay teams posted times of 42.58 (4×100) for fourth place overall and 1:30.03 (4×200) for third overall. Merritt ran a 5:23.43 in the 1600 meters (fourth) and 11:42.65 (third) in the 3200 meters. Merritt ( in both the 1600 and 3200) and the 4×200 meter team qualified for the Bronze level elite times in their prospective events.

Coffee had other athletes participate in Sectionals who did not meet the qualifying standards for the state meet for the top 8 finishes.

Lorenzo Harvey placed tenth  in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet and 6.25 inches. Senior Nevin Swanson finished tenth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:4.33.  Nevin also competed in the 800 meter run finishing twelfth with a time of 2:06.11. Sophomore Tyrese Woodgett finished ninth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.05 seconds. Sophomore James Jarrard competed in the 110 meter hurdles finishing twelfth place with a time of 15.88 seconds. The girls 4×200 meter relay team of Breana Griffin, Iyani Johnson, Janiya Brown and Ja’Maria Harvey finished thirteenth with a time of 1:48.80 — which is also a new Coffee High record.
