Youth council hears from veteran pursuing college degree, recognizes community leaders at first meeting

At the first meeting of the new Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council, the council heard a special presentation from Guylee Daniel Washington Jr., of Waycross. The council chose Shasmine Thomas as the Outstanding Community Leader Spotlight and the Youth Council’s spotlight was Jr. Mayor Jameson Cummings.

 

 

Jr. Mayor Cummings was recognized for this month’s Youth Council spotlight. Jameson is the son of James and LaCarol Cummings. He attends Coffee High School where he is a senior and potential honor graduate. Over the summer, Jameson was recognized as an AP Scholar. He has over 250 hours of community service. His church home is Perpetual Praise and Worship Ministries.  Jameson plans to attend college and major in Computer Science.

Shasmine Thomas is the owner and coach of Cheer Leads Elite where she encourages the youth in her programs to actively participate in the community. The Cheer teams have assisted with programs such as free physicals, Mental Health Awareness, and have participated in numerous community events throughout the season. Coach Thomas was recognized for her service as a leader in the community.

 

 

The special speaker for the month of August was Guylee Daniel Washington Jr. Mr. Washington is a proud veteran and currently a non-traditional student at Coastal Pines Techinical College – Waycross Campus pursuing an associate’s degree in Computer Support Specialist Technology. He spoke to the council about the importance of continuing education training at all stages of life.

 

 

During the meeting, Jr. Mayor Cummings opened the floor for attendees to discuss options for preventing teen cyberbullying. Several of those in attendance offered suggestions and comments pertaining to the subject. 

 

 

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council members for the 2023-2024 school year are: Jameson Cummings (Jr. Mayor), Meiaa Batten (Jr. Mayor Pro Tem), Jordan Cleveland, Kiran Reddy, Zynia Hunt, Destiny Henderson, Zipporiah Wilcox, Jada Marshall, Dominic Mimbang, Dickson Petitfrere, and Jeremiah Bazell.

 

 

The next Mayor’s Youth Council will be held on September 19, at 6 pm at City Hall in the Commission Chambers. The public is invited to attend Youth Council meetings.
