A series of arguments over cleaning up damage from Hurricane Helene turned violent on October 2, 2024 and resulted in a shots fired incident, according to an incident report from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office.

The report states that on October 2, Larry McLeod, 60, threatened to kill his son’s stepson then pointed a gun at his son and fired a shot over his head. The incident began the day before when McLeod and his son’s stepson began arguing over cleaning up storm damage. The following day, McLeod went to his son’s home on a side-by-side with a passenger, according to the report.

Initially, McLeod began apologizing to his son. Then, the report says, things escalated into an argument. During the argument, several people walked outside, one of whom was the stepson. When McLeod saw the stepson, they began arguing then he said he was “going to f*&$ing kill him.”

The report says that the son pulled a gun after hearing the alleged threat but kept it by his side. Then McLeod and the passenger left the residence. A few moments later, McLeod came back by himself, this time with a gun of his own. According to the report, McLeod pressed the gun to his son’s chest then pointed it at his head. McLeod then pointed the gun above his son’s head and fired a shot, according to the report. Then he returned to his home, the report says.

A short time later, McLeod returned to his son’s home a third time, this time to get a generator he had let his son borrow. Deputies were beginning to arrive by then and they took McLeod into custody. Officers searched McLeod’s home and found a .40-caliber Glock in a gun safe.

McLeod was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threats and acts. He was transported to the Coffee County Jail.
