SGSC defeats Edward Waters JV in season opener

The South Georgia State College Hawks celebrated their fifteenth basketball season opener on campus with a 98-57 win over the junior varsity squad from Edward Waters University.

The Hawks (1-0) were led by four players in double figures, including leading scorer Devon Rainey with 15 points, four assists and nine steals. Justin McCarter had 13 points and five assists, followed by Ashton Pennamon with 12 points, six assists and four steals. Grant Raven finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Defense continues to be a trademark for the Hawks as the new season begins. SGSC forced 35 turnovers, which included 26 steals. The Hawks shot 49.3 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from beyond the arc, and made 66.7 percent of their free throws.

SGSC will host the next two regular season games on the Douglas Campus. The Hawks will face Franklin Prep Academy this Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by a matchup against Reinhardt University’s JV team Saturday at 4 p.m. All Douglas Campus games are played in the gymnasium inside the Wellness Center.

The next Waycross home games will be November 15-16 when SGSC hosts the 11th annual Applebee’s Okefenokee Classic.

General admission to all regular season home games is $7 with children five and under admitted free.
