On March 11, 2025, Senator John F. Kennedy, representing Senate District 18, presented a resolution officially declaring it Georgia Linemen Day. This recognition highlights the vital work of Georgia’s linemen—dedicated men and women who work tirelessly to ensure that we have the power and connectivity necessary for modern life.

The Electric Cities of Georgia (ECG) honored Charlie Purcell, the Electrical Distribution Supervisor with the City of Douglas Electric Department, for his outstanding leadership and contributions during Hurricane Helene at the State Capitol. Alongside ECG, the City of Douglas proudly recognizes Charlie and his entire Electric Department team for their dedication to serving the citizens of Douglas every day.

According to the press release from ECG, “Charlie Purcell is more than just the Utility Director for the City of Douglas—he’s a battle-hardened veteran of the power industry and a lineman with an unwavering commitment to his community. With 30 years of dedicated service, Charlie has climbed the ranks, overcoming challenges along the way. When Hurricane Helene left the city in total darkness—no transmission, no meters turning—Charlie took charge. Amid the chaos, he executed critical switching orders, leading the charge to restore power. His expertise and steady leadership were the backbone of the city’s recovery. Within his tenure, Charlie has battled countless storms and aided other utilities through Mutual Aid, but nothing compared to what he faced on September 27th. It was a test of endurance, skill, and sheer determination. For 29 grueling days, the City of Douglas crews worked non-stop, without a single day of rest—because that’s what had to be done. And under Charlie’s leadership, they did it safely, efficiently, and with the grit of true linemen. Even after restoring power to Douglas, Charlie and his crews didn’t stop. They extended a helping hand to Satilla REMC, proving that in this line of work, it’s about more than just keeping the lights on—it’s about standing together, answering the call, and never backing down. Charlie Purcell embodies what it means to be a lineman: experienced, relentless, and always ready.”

Georgia Linemen Day is a tribute to all those who serve on the front lines to keep our communities powered and safe. The City of Douglas is a member of the Electric Cities of Georgia, a non-profit organization that provides strategic and technical services to 52 public-powered communities with utility operations.
